Self-leadership: being a leader in ourselves before thinking of being others

Even the biggest clouds follow the wind, because the wind knows where it is going. The wind knows itself, knows it is volatile, and has incredible power and purpose. Man is not very different from the wind, because in its most authentic state it hints at the self-worth that makes them such, that makes them leaders. Man has the ability to self-govern and self-lead, and although they sound similar, they are as different as being a leader and being a boss, and with the same virtue of being in the same person. Based on this observation, it is evident that man can act in the same way - to make it more practical - within an organization. Hierarchies empower certain people to be heads of other people, however they do not formally empower them to be leaders,Well, being a leader is your own faculty and not a characteristic of the position. The Chief can be a manager or a leader. The difference between the two roles is explained by Javier Fernández Aguado in a very simple way: “the manager is the one who makes people do what they have to do while the leader is the one who makes people want to do what they have to do” 1. What we see here are a couple of concepts that must be defined, which are self-government, self-leadership or personal leadership, both concepts linked to the exercise of leadership towards a team."The manager is the one that makes people do what they have to do while the leader is the one that makes people want to do what they have to do" 1. What we see here are a couple of concepts that must be entered to be defined, which are self-government, self-leadership or personal leadership, both concepts linked to the exercise of leadership towards a team."The manager is the one that makes people do what they have to do while the leader is the one that makes people want to do what they have to do" 1. What we see here are a couple of concepts that must be entered to be defined, which are self-government, self-leadership or personal leadership, both concepts linked to the exercise of leadership towards a team.

To develop this idea, let us briefly make clear that it is self-government and that it is self-leadership. Self-government is the exercise of the balance of behavior through self-knowledge and self-discipline, that is, control over our own life. Achieving wanting to do what I have to do is self-leadership. To lead yourself, you must first be convinced that what you set out to do in life is what you really want, and not just what is good for you. This is very important, because at the time of introspection, one usually evaluates what is convenient for him to do. At the time of reflection, we must focus on who we are (know our strengths and weaknesses), what we have (capacities and skills) and what we want to enhance,All this focused on personal growth as a potential incentive for our daily actions, only then will we be clear on what direction we must follow to have the success we desire in life. The big difference between a self-manager and a self-leader is that the first one lives in the "hopefully", expects things to happen and is limited in time to just living day by day, instead the self-leader goes out to look for opportunities and He works day by day to make things happen. He is full of passion and personal motivation, and with effective self-control he can accurately do everything he is planning in his life.He expects things to happen and he limits himself in time to just living day by day, instead the autolider goes out to look for opportunities and works day by day to make things happen. He is full of passion and personal motivation, and with effective self-control he can accurately do everything he is planning in his life.He expects things to happen and he limits himself in time to just living day by day, instead the autolider goes out to look for opportunities and works day by day to make things happen. He is full of passion and personal motivation, and with effective self-control he can accurately do everything he is planning in his life.

Why be leaders of ourselves and not just managers? In personal life there is' what we want to do 'and' what we should do ', and that is why taking this idea to the macro level is so difficult to convince an entire team that meeting organizational objectives is' what we want to do 'and not just "what we should do." And that is where the personal growth incentive mechanism comes into your personal life - in the macro aspect there are an infinity of incentives, from recognition to monetary incentives. Offering yourself a life guided by values and personal development is the best thing you can do in contemporary life, since self-government allows you to work in self-government for the entire team you lead. If you are a leader,You will find that leading by example is a much more accurate way to build group trust than simply using your formal power to give orders. A perfect balance of leadership and power will make them follow you and convince themselves that what you are pursuing is a noble challenge and that it is the desired destination. If you do not impose conviction on the group, they will never have self-government and will fail every time you walk away. You cannot pretend to free a bird with broken wings, you must first heal it and then motivate it to fly.they will never have self-government and will fail every time you walk away. You cannot pretend to free a bird with broken wings, you must first heal it and then motivate it to fly.they will never have self-government and will fail every time you walk away. You cannot pretend to free a bird with broken wings, you must first heal it and then motivate it to fly.

Leadership and government are not the same, we speak of direction and control of work groups of which we are not very sure of their maturity (level of commitment, skills, knowledge and… average) and that will make it very difficult for us in the organization's tasks if we don't take the time to evaluate it. If the work group is very immature, it will be better for you to exercise constant government and leadership, always with feedback that increasingly repairs the team's weaknesses and enhances the strengths, in order to be able to increase the maturity of the team over time. How is such work effectively accomplished? First you must govern yourself, discipline yourself and lead your life, only in this way can you adapt to the type of group that is and take them to a desired Direction by Habits and escape the obsolete practice of Direction by Objectives.

If one studies the Management by Habits and the Management by Values, one will come face to face with an unequivocal example that personal leadership will impact cally on group leadership. The model considers four dimensions in which the leader must operate: “perspective (strategic dimension); equity ('group' dimension); strength (operational dimension) and balance (personal dimension) ”2. As far as we are concerned, balance and self-knowledge is part of self-government; I cannot instill any value in the work of my team if I do not empower myself with those values, nor can I guide acting with certainty if I do not know with what criteria I am managing group work. Knowing yourself is the best way to govern, because you assume that your team is not made up of people like you,You will identify the faults you have and you will repair them in time, being able to repair those of the group as well and feed back. You must be generous and display the capabilities of your team.

As a leader, under this model, you have to dedicate yourself to monopolizing organizational values and transforming them into "ways of acting" (habits) and a way of understanding reality. The purpose of this model is for it to become the strategy of self-government and personal growth. Habits are the “set of repetitive and natural positive behaviors, aligned with the vision and values of the organization, that impact business results” 3 and a good leader must take these habits and impregnate them in the daily work of the team of job. Now, this concept of habit could be confused with that of routine, but they are separated by a special quality: commitment as a factor in personal development. The DpH pursues both the objective work (final product of an action:the finished car or the repaired television) as subjective work, that is, the person “conquers the truth of himself in his actions, and, in parallel, the full good for himself with his conduct” 4, that is, Self-perfect and self-accomplish with work, with a cause.

There are several, but divergent, studies of the Management by Habits. Its creator and maximum exponent is Javier Fernández Aguado, a Spanish who today takes relevance as one of the greatest Management thinkers at an international level. I would like not to focus on this style of leadership - otherwise one of the best styles in the world, as well as the most comprehensive so far - and only mention it to be able to expose the issue of self-government and self-leadership in something that today it is being done in the world of Senior Management.

We could mention Self-government and Self-leadership from an individual level and not so much in the direction of groups. In the movie "Shawshank Redemption" (Dreams of Flight or Dreams of Freedom) we see a banker sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit, to be someone in jail. How? Making use of your skills and knowledge, developing a long-term strategy with small personal goals and, above all, self-governing. He went from being 'nobody' in prison to becoming one of the most influential inmates, because he did not choose the power that oppresses other men, but the one that sets them free. The story relates how after 16 years in prison, he managed to escape and accumulate a fortune of more than $ 300,000, not only with his knowledge, but also with self-discipline and with the conviction that his tedious work would bear fruit and the opportunity to start his life from scratch. Although he did not seek to be a leader in the group, he was anyway in himself, this is how a person who gets what he wants works.

Why is it important to rule over oneself rather than rule over others? Because the leader is a formator par excellence, however, he must first form himself. The best way to transmit values to a team is to be a correspondent of those values, to live them day by day, being a reference subject in the team and thus helping to build the group's personal abilities. As for the formation of values, the leader -has a double task: on the one hand, look for those people who are virtuous to follow his example and, on the other, develop the virtues in himself to be a subject of reference-5. If a leader does not form himself, does not have self-government or self-leadership, most likely, he will not be able to make the empowerment of work effective in his team, so he will not instill organizational values,it will not promote personal development and it will not form the virtues of your team, thus generating entropy in leadership. It is not enough just to be an expert in the tasks that have to be directed, you also have to be human and be a valued benchmark against the rest, and that requires humility and a certain passion for life.
