While on my way to meet a client, the taxi driver and I discussed the employment situation in our country. We both agree that what was happening was not a coincidence but the consequence of a change in the world economic model, in the mode of production.
Fewer jobs, more opportunities
Undoubtedly, there will be fewer and fewer jobs at least in the traditional way that reigned throughout the last century. This is due to:
- The use of technology to replace labor. Greater efficiency in processes. An overproduction of goods that has battered the markets.
As a consequence of this situation, unemployed people cannot buy the products that are manufactured and this worsens the problem.
But this does not mean under any circumstances that it is a general rule for 100% of the working-age population. This historic moment challenges us to be creative: companies are increasingly looking for people to help them become more efficient and competitive in the market, therefore, if we apply some search techniques adapted to the new reality, we will surely find where to offer our services and be well paid.
Diogenes lamp
Surely they have heard of the philosopher Diogenes who walked with a lamp at noon and when asked why he used a lamp in the sunlight he replied that he was looking for an honest man.
Many times the search for a person who meets the expectations of a position in a company or a company that requires a person like me can turn into something similar to the search for Diogenes. This is why we have to refine our search mode, apply more effective techniques than going door-to-door with a CV under your arm looking for an interview.
So how to search.
1.-First of all we must be aware of all our skills and training. Be sure what we are good at and what areas we need to reinforce.
2.-Make a list of the companies in which I would like to work. I know that you have possibly hit rock bottom and say: "I do whatever it takes" but this instead of helping you takes you further away from good opportunities. This because it weakens your leadership, I don't think that in a company they give you a good job because "you do whatever it takes".
There are several sources to make this list and one that is very forgotten but still works is the phone book. There are thousands of registered companies and if you search well you can make a list of at least one hundred companies near your town.
Another source is of course the internet. Pages like www.aldaba.org where you can upload your resume and look for offers that suit your potential.
3.-Establish contact and offer your professional services. Make that call and contact the person who is in charge of recruiting staff. Be polite and courteous, offer your services with professionalism even as a concierge. Do not underestimate yourself with phrases like: I am looking for a job, I am desperate, I have a family to support, I have x time unemployed, etc. These are not the things that a company wants to hear. Best proof: “good morning, my name is x, I would like to offer my services to your prestigious company. I am a specialist in x trade, with more than x years of experience in x area. I am sure that by allowing myself to be part of your team I can contribute to the growth of your company. Would you be interested in receiving my resume for more details?
4.-Attend the interview appropriately. It is not about exaggerating with jackets, ties or super formal suits, but it is highly recommended to attend with an outfit at the height of the position to which we are applying. For example, if you request in the technical area some dockers with a clean and well-ironed short-sleeved shirt, clean safety boots will suffice. It is as if you were saying, "I am ready to start today."
5.-Feed the soul. Do not think it will be easy, you can receive many "no" in this process and that will hit your little heart, but if you focus on your goal and keep reading those motivational books that you do not even look at when you go shopping at the Super, or your Bible if you are a believer, where you will find hundreds of stories of perseverance and faith. The thing is that you must strengthen yourself internally in order to emerge victorious from this battle in your life.
I do not claim that this document is a treaty on economics, I have also ignored politics and my criticism of governments, which must create favorable conditions for the development of all. Rather, I want to touch the hearts of those who have a sleeping giant in their hearts and need only a small impulse to move forward because I firmly believe that from these people forged by adversity, a different leadership can emerge that will serve as inspiration to build a better world..
