Many fear to become aware of health situations, to tell the couple, and they choose evasion or denial to protect themselves from what they suppose would hurt them. One of the requirements to achieve the objectives that we set ourselves, is without a doubt, to have realism. Looking at things as they are and overcoming the tendency to self-deception, is crucial to successfully tackle the day to day. Many people, however, choose to turn their faces and refuse to make contact with those events that they value as stressful or that seem discordant with their map of beliefs and values.

It could be said that we deceive ourselves with objects, with death, with the love of others, with business and with many other things, because we do not like the truths that confront us with our inconsistencies and force us to review and change ourselves. We permanently deceive ourselves as children, with the illusion that the facts will disappear and will not affect us, as, as a popular saying indicates: “ the truth hurts ”.

Fortunately, there is another vision in this regard and for example the Bible reminds us that "the truth will make us free", which invites us to consider that despite the discomforts that may occur, some truths lead to liberation and maturity.

The origin of this evasive trend is both biological and cultural. In his book "The Blind Spot", Daniel Goleman points out that our brain is naturally configured to evade what bothers us, and that there is a relationship between attention and anxiety, in such a way that when some situation collides with our personal schemes, the The body itself tends in an unconscious way to avoid a bad trance. Goleman points out that there are things that we avoid being aware of, that we tend to hide certain facts or take care to attribute a different meaning to them, to deny or reduce the level of threat. We choose to reduce the levels of attention, because attention is the gateway to the experience. That which is not paid attention does not exist for us as an experience. We create like this,blind spots of attention and experience, not to see, not to hear not to know, not to realize and, therefore, not to suffer. These evasive blind spots are very frequent in people with a sensitive tendency.

Culturally, deception is also encouraged. Many parents cheat on their children, many couples cheat on each other, many vendors cheat on their customers, and many media outlets distort the facts in favor of their interests. In addition, regarding our social image, most people show what they are not. Thus, lying is an old custom acquired through culture. We deceive ourselves and we deceive each other. Of course, the results of this situation cannot be beneficial.

The consequences of self-deception, of fearing the truth, of giving up looking at the facts, usually cost us a high price. In health, refusing to go to the doctor or to take care of a certain symptomatology, can make a disease that could be treated timely and successfully, be complicated by denial ("nothing happens to me").

Likewise, refusing to see the risk indicators in a possible partner with a violent, addictive or irresponsible tendency, can allow us to sink into links that generate high levels of conflict and emotional distress. In business, we can fall into an economic abyss and end up "bankrupt," if we insist on not attending to signs that something is wrong or that a certain decision would be inconvenient.

The way out of this situation is voluntary awareness: wanting to realize ourselves in order to improve ourselves and live better, taking responsibility for what we are, for what exists and for what we think, feel and do. Hearing truths, accepting criticism, facing mistakes and their consequences reveals maturity. Being an adult means, to a large extent, understanding that not everything will be pleasant or convenient, that we have many to learn, that it is normal to err or choose in the wrong way, and that we are not a finished product, but in permanent reconfiguration and improvement. This is the route to authenticity and wellness. He who does what he must achieves what he wants.
