On the other hand, from the position of students, in our school life we ​​have all met teachers and professors who we remember with affection and respect as close, useful, friends, who transmitted us a model, values, rigorous scientific knowledge that we were recreating and discovering with your help.

These experiences in the performance of both roles indicate the importance of accompanying the student in their learning with a close presence that goes beyond the goals in the transmission of knowledge.

More and more in the scientific-pedagogical literature, this role of the teacher is being recognized in each teaching act, but it has stood out even more strongly in recent years in the recognition of the figure of the tutor. In addition, the experiences accumulated in the Cuban university context regarding the work of the guide teacher in the regular daytime course as well as those related to the role of the tutor in universalization reaffirm them as essential educational figures whose reason for existence is precisely the full individualization of The education.

This constitutes a synthesis of the fundamental aspects of tutoring in the university context, which has been made taking as a reference the elaborations that various authors have contributed in the theoretical order as well as the experiences of teachers ”. We hope that the content we present will be useful to the tutors in the development of their work. We trust that your study will provide new alternatives in this regard. Either way, it is the daily practice in the classroom, starring them, the most legitimate source of solutions and answers to the problems they face in the university educational context.

What is tutoring?

The development at the end of the 20th century of the so-called «Knowledge Revolution» has generated exponential increases in all fields of knowledge. Systematic knowledge has gradually replaced experience in the development of technology and today sophisticated knowledge and theoretical constitutes the primary route to technical progress.

The possibility of participating in the knowledge economy requires a new set of skills: the individual must be much more qualified than before and also must demonstrate a greater degree of intellectual independence, must be flexible and be willing to continue studying much further of the age in which it has been traditional to do so; imposing an important change in the didactic action.

This should be directed towards a much more autonomous education (where mere declarative learning does not make much sense) that affects other much broader and more comprehensive fields of formation of the student's personality. This means opening up to new possibilities that encourage students to research and discovery, to get to know the external reality and to integrate into a society that is changing day by day and with much broader social demands. From this perspective, justifying the need for tutoring as an instrument at the service of the student is not difficult.

The definition of mentoring given by Marchesi (1986) states:

“Set of technical supports, aimed at both students and educational agents. Its aim is to achieve the maximum adjustment between individual potential and educational requirements in order to achieve greater training of students in their personal development and in learning "

In this way, tutoring must be understood in terms of aids that must be offered to the student and educational agents in order to stimulate the integral development of their personality. But, is the concept of tutoring understood from the same perspective at different educational levels?

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

The tutoring action is understood as a pedagogical work aimed at the tutelage, accompaniment and monitoring of the students with the intention that the educational process of each student is oriented towards their comprehensive training and takes into account their characteristics and personal needs.

The criteria for the organization and the priority lines of operation of the tutoring action in the Institute are specified in the Tutoring Action Plan, which is part of the Curricular Project of the Stage and is prepared by the Guidance Department and approved by the Senate.

Tutoring is an educational resource at the service of learning and therefore should help the student learn more and better in all areas of the curriculum. For this reason, it is essential that there is a high degree of coherence between the intentions of the Tutoring Action Plan and the educational principles and criteria agreed in the rest of the elements of the Curriculum Project of the stage.

Guidance and tutoring of students are the task of all teachers. They cover both the actions that, more specifically, the tutor teacher develops with his group or in communication with families and the rest of the teaching staff, as well as those others that each teacher within his area carries out to guide, mentor and support the learning process of each of his students.

The tutoring action is part of the educational action and is inseparable from the teaching-learning process. All teachers are tutors, since it is up to all of us to protect the learning process of each student in our areas, in accordance with the common objectives established in the PAT and the Curriculum Project.

Although the guidance and tutoring of students is a task shared by the teaching staff, the figure of the tutor, as a teaching coordination body recognized in the Organic Regulations of the IES, is still necessary in the coordination of the group's team of teachers, in contact with families, and in the development of some specific functions.

Each group of students has a tutor appointed by the Director from among the teachers who teach the group. The tutors of the same course meet periodically with the Head of Studies and the Counselor to plan the activities to be developed with the students, prepare the meetings with the parents and the evaluation sessions of the teachers, etc.

The coordination of the functions related to the orientation and tutoring of the students is a competence assigned to the Faculty and not to the Guidance Department. The coordination and direction of the action of the tutors is a competence that corresponds to the Head of Studies.

The Guidance Department is an advisory and support body whose function is to make proposals to the Senate regarding the organization and operation of the tutorial action, collaborate with the Head of Studies in coordinating the tutors and also collaborate with the tutors and the the rest of the teaching staff in the development of the Tutorial Action Plan, providing them with materials and resources and also participating in direct work with students and parents.

PURPOSE OF THE TUTORING

The tutoring and orientation of the students have as fundamental purposes:

FUNCTIONS OF THE TUTOR Although guidance and tutoring is a task for the entire teaching team, there is always a teacher who is more specifically in charge of:

  • Do a personal monitoring of each student and facilitate that all teachers in the group take into account the needs of each one of them.

  • Direct the concerns and demands of students and mediate conflicts that may arise
  • Guide students about their academic and professional future
  • To act as a liaison between the teachers and the parents of the students.

THE WEEKLY HOUR OF TUTORING

In all ESO courses there is a weekly hour dedicated to carrying out specific tutoring activities, although, due to what has been said before, the tutor's work is not limited only to what is seen in the weekly tutoring hour.

The weekly tutoring hour is not just another subject. Rather, it is a space for analysis and reflection on the learning process, on coexistence in the institute, on the climate of the group itself, on the functioning of the center, on the participation of students in school dynamics and on the future academic and professional.

MAIN TOPICS OF GROUP TUTORING

The main topics that are developed in the weekly tutoring schedule with the group of students are the following:

  • The reception of students at the beginning of the course in the group and in the Institute, facilitating mutual knowledge among all and the creation of a good atmosphere of coexistence and learning
  • The internal organization of the group, choosing the delegates and encouraging the participation of all its members in the dynamics of the class and in the life of the center
  • The monitoring of the evaluation process carried out by the teachers, periodically analyzing the progress of the course and knowing how the teachers see our academic performance.
  • Guidance and support in learning, preventing difficulties that may arise and adopting the appropriate measures if they appear.
  • The academic-professional orientation, providing students with information about the options that are presented to them at the end of the course and the stage.

Our Commander-in-Chief has pointed out: “The school occupies the main place within the set of influences that acts in the formation of children and young people. Within each study center, educational work is developed in the classroom, at work and in political-ideological, productive, recreational, cultural activities; that is, the educational work directs the entire school life.
