Managers versus emotional intelligence

Since 1995 it has been gaining strength in the mouths of many psychologists and scholars of human behavior, the term Emotional Intelligence, who have shared their research and have made many of us think about the subject.

Roció Cárdenas Romero defines Emotional Intelligence in the following way:

"Ability to know oneself and their peers in order to live harmoniously in an increasingly interactive society"

While Felicia Cambronero Arce defines Emotional Intelligence in the following way:

"Ability to respond effectively to environmental stimuli in interpersonal and individual relationships"

These definitions offer us a clear signal that all human beings who in one way or another have interaction with the other members of our species, must develop our emotional intelligence in order to guarantee a harmonious coexistence.

In this context, we then specify that Managers do not escape this reality, and we add, that it is essential to be successful as Managers, to have a harmonious relationship between our thoughts and emotions.

How to achieve that harmony?

John Maxtell in his theory of self-conditioned evolution affirms that: "our layer of rational thought has developed to cover our emotional side"

This means that a good management of our rational side will help us to expel our emotions in the correct way.

The manager who has to deal with different types of personality on a daily basis, must always try to manage his emotions effectively; and this as we pointed out, is only possible through strong control of the rational side of the brain. You must also positively manage the characteristics of Emotional Intelligence; namely:

  • Ability to motivate ourselves Ability to persevere in the persistence of frustrations Ability to control impulses Ability to regulate our own moods Ability to prevent anxiety from interfering with our rational faculties.

The harmonious relationship between the emotional part and the rational part of the brain, as well as the good management of the characteristics of Emotional Intelligence, will allow the manager not only to have a good relationship with his employees, but will also allow him to maximize the performance of the same.

Finally, it is very important to keep in mind that emotional intelligence in no way seeks to inhibit us from our emotional expressions; Rather, she is looking for emotional responses or expressions to be used appropriately.
