What is success and why don't we all believe the same?

Anonim

Peter Senge (the famous writer of "The Fifth Discipline") talks in his book about mental models. These are "assumptions, generalizations, and images deeply ingrained in the thought structures and hearts of each one of us." And these models are a reference or a framework for our way of seeing and interacting with the world. In simple words, it is a set of beliefs. That is to say, things that we believe are like this, that are true and in this way. It may have been something we were taught as children, something we learned (right or wrong), something we were purposely or unintentionally convinced of. These beliefs are part of our history and this defines how we interpret something. Complicated?

Let's see it with an example: hypothetically, I have a client who as a child did not show great dedication in school and her notebooks showed a little this little importance that she gave to school. Her mother, who wanted her to do her best, helped her improve by sitting next to her and teaching her some techniques to make her notebooks a little more beautiful and “pleasant” to look at. Then there was a “double underline” to the important titles, some colors to highlight different ideas, figurines pasted instead of drawings for the ephemeris, a little improved calligraphy, etc. What do you think the result was? Dozens of congratulations written by the teacher in her notebooks highlighting how beautiful they were. "Very good!" The girl may have thought, "I did it, I'm successful" (well, she surely didn't think of it with those wordsbut that idea was imprinted on his mind). And from then on this girl grew up with the idea (belief) that being successful had to do with pleasing others (before she was her teacher - and certainly her mother - then she will be her boss, co-workers, her partner, etc.).

This is just an example to illustrate the idea with which I want you to reflect. Because how your life and your story has been defined is how you are acting. And if you don't change that mental model and destroy some of those beliefs that are there innocently placed in your mind and outlining what you do and how you interpret things, how you judge success (in yourself and in others), you can have a huge limitation. inside you that does not let you achieve what you want.

Sometimes not reaching a goal is not a weakness of your own but a limitation of your own mental model, of that perspective that we have internally and that frames our reality.

Returning to the question of success, surely you have already been able to link both ideas. The definition of success in the dictionary has to do with accomplishing a goal / objective. But when we see someone on television who has a lot of money and we think they are successful, maybe we have no idea what their goal was (which could have been to start a family and live in a quiet house in the middle of the country, in instead of going around the channel on duty). But since you have money, you must be successful. It is our mental model speaking… and not to mention the mental model of that man that we have no idea if he is happy or not with his achievements. Maybe yes, because he has money. Maybe not, but his mental model told him that what he has is the best he could get, so be satisfied…

What is the reflection that I want to leave today? Precisely that… ask yourself and reflect: what is your true dream? What is your greatest and supreme career goal or goal? It doesn't matter if you don't believe it today (if you think it's not possible, that you don't have the capacity to achieve it or that you don't deserve it), what do you really want to achieve from within your heart?

And what limiting beliefs do you have right now? Maybe you think you don't have the money to open that business and be your own boss, or you think your boss is never going to give you that promotion because he doesn't like you. Or you think you can achieve your goals but maybe you should have some more noble and charitable goal instead of thinking about climbing positions and making more money. You see it? You can always find limitations to any dream. But you must find the ones that make you noise and limit your life and your personal success. But think about it, dig inside your mind and find them. Because you can work with them and change them for new beliefs that enhance your career and lead you to achieve your goals. If not, they become obstacles that you cannot destroy and that end up confirming that you were right, that your dream was not possible, that you didn't have the ability or you didn't deserve it.
