What is a sustainable university?

Anonim

A University is a corporation that integrates four levels such as: professors, students, administrative (workers) and authorities. That it has academic purposes, research development, social projection and generation of goods and services; with the primary objective of producing professionals for the benefit of society. For such compliance, there must be a contractual and development exchange with the environment; For this reason, it uses goods and services of all kinds from the external environment, to generate a diversity of inputs for the economic, social and political agents of the external environment, it could be said that it is a corporation that generates final and intermediate goods and services to the market.

In order for the whole circle to function harmoniously and for no link to disappear or weaken, all agents must develop to the maximum of their nominal capacity. In the first instance in the internal sphere; that is, all the subsystems that are within the university system must be meeting their minimum standards in a harmonious, efficient and responsible manner. Making an analogy, the man as a system, before worrying about developing his social activities, must first think and worry about eating well and dressing well, according to his level of need or requirement and budget. And when it comes to maximum nominal capacity, it is understood that every organization must be meeting the minimum standards of competence in each of the actions and decisions that are made or taken.

It is recalled that " sustainable development" was defined in 1987 as "the aspects that make it possible to solve present needs without compromising the possibility that future generations meet their own needs." When it speaks of “solving present needs”, it obviously refers to the sustainability and sustainability aspects that must be taken into account in the present and projected into the future. And when it speaks of “without compromising the possibility that future generations satisfy their own needs”, it refers exclusively to the aspect of sustainability and sustainability of the future, which guarantees the control of the environment and the satisfaction of the needs of future societies..

There cannot be a sustainable university without first solving the problem of sustainability. And a sustainable university means that all its internal subsystems are working properly; that is, at its maximum nominal capacity. Which is not being fully met at present. When one refers to its maximum nominal capacity, it means that the minimum standards of efficiency and profitability are being met.. How not to talk about sustainability, when the operating units do not march in unison with the directives and institutional interests? How not to talk about sustainability, when the authorities do not know what happens in each operating unit? How not to talk about sustainability If the authorities make their decisions without consultation, without weighing the consequences they bring ?, How can we not talk about sustainability when decisions are taken that are at odds with the technical and economic recommendations to be carried out ?, How not Talk about sustainability, when there is an inability to spend due to the lack of plans, programs and projects? How can we not talk about sustainability, when personal interests are prioritized over institutional interests? How can we not talk about sustainability, when teachers are not integrated by a common goal, but each one is an island or a ship in tow Without institutional orientation? How can we not talk about sustainability, when the UNI-UNMSM-UNALM agreement does not know how to “sell” its strategic image to the government, to obtain significant advantages, such as a loan with the World Bank's state guarantee? How not to talk about sustainability, when the basic needs of students are not being prioritized, such as the adequate development of their study, sports and cultural activities? How not to talk about sustainability, when the minimum guarantees are not available internal security of movable property? How can we not talk about sustainability, when there is a lack of honest, transparent and coherent sincere in the public management of universities?

Consequently, to speak of a " Sustainable University " means, in the first instance, to comply with these minimum endogenous standards; that is to say, with everything "that should be and exist" within universities. For this, it is essential that those who assume management positions, redirect their decisions and actions to compliance with the minimum standards established on the basis of a relevant and viable strategic plan.
