The following article will explain in detail what coaching is, its benefits as well as the most innovative methodologies to increase empowerment at a personal and organizational level.

DEFINITION OF COACHING

The word coaching is an Anglo-Saxon term that has been integrated into the usual vocabulary, being part of people's thinking and also in a general way in companies. The origin of the finished is not completely established but some studies affirm that it comes from the Hungarian “kocsi” which, in that language translates to a special type of road or highway that makes more like the transport from one city to another. This term is adapted to different languages, for example, German as "kutche" and in English as "coach". It can be interpreted that "Coaching" is the way of transporting people from one place to another, that is, the means by which they are taken to where they want to get (from a personal point of view).

The literary translation of Coaching in English is training. Some institutions and experts define Coaching as follows:

Coaching….

TIMOTHY GALWAY

SIR JOHN WITHMORE

Jeni Mumford in her book: Coaching for dummiesdefines in a brief and simple way what Coaching is: A meaningful conversation that encourages you to create the life you want. This definition encourages meaningful conversations, in which it is possible to clarify the thought process and by default solve problems, objectively establishing agreements and commitments. Coaching uses dialogue as a powerful tool to propel a person in the right direction.

A useful conversation with a coach, who is a highly qualified person in different areas together (piscology, sociology, anthropology, among other disciplines). A good coach questions and helps to solve the following unknowns, allowing to find the necessary answers and thus achieve a change:

  • Why is acting in such a way? What ideas does the person in question have about himself that prevent him from acting in another way? What options for change do they really have? What must be done to obtain results? is it possible to stay motivated?

It is necessary to define what is NOT COACHING

  • Therapy: Therapy does constitute a very important part of coaching but this is not synonymous with it. Many of the therapies are generally based on the present and on what is expected of the future, although the important point is to analyze what happened in the past that prevents moving forward. A mentor: Having a mentor is a powerful way to promote personal development. In coaching, you look for a mentor to follow. It can be a person with whom you work together in a work context or a person who has a positive response and attitude before the eye. Advise: A coach avoids advising at all costs. The coach analyzes and proposes options but the true function of this is to facilitate the thought processes of the other individual.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: COACH AND COACHEE

There are two important parts of the coaching process: coach and coachee.

The following will be defined: what is a coach?

The coach is a person specialized in the subject (coaching) who accompanies people in the process of seeking goals and personal improvement. In other words, the coach is the A coach that personal companion who with different methods proposes the guide to reach the goal, this always helps to get out of the comfort zone.

Characteristics of a coach

  • Asks questions: questions key points for the coachee Confront and empower. The coach deeply analyzes the coachee and shows her shortcomings, while showing her talents in order to empower her. The coach works as a constant motivator of the coachee at all times to achieve her goals. It improves strengths and minimizes weaknesses. The coach seeks for the coachee to know accurately identify and develop their strengths as well as understand and minimize their weaknesses. Maintains focus. Once the coachee chooses the mere work to do, the coach must see to it that he stays focused and busy in achieving it. Set personal or professional goals: a coach never says what to do but rather helps guide the individual according to the personal development techniques you need until you reach the goal.Introduce the coachee to learning and continuous improvement.

So if the coach is who supports, who is a coachee?

It is the person or group that really makes the change, the main character (s) when it comes to coaching.

Some elements of the coachee are:

  • He is a mentally healthy person, since he decides to venture into coaching of his own free will. He behaves like a client and not like a patient. Both his circumstances and his personality can be integrated into the coaching process. His social role and his condition allow him to establish the connection with the method: friendship, family or failing that., the work. Coaching will help you in the first stay to know yourself and live the life you want. You have a desire for life change. You know that the road will not be easy but you can visualize success.

BENEFITS OF COACHING

One of the primary characteristics of coaching is that it is not necessary to know exactly what needs to be changed, improved or ordered in a person's life for it to really work. Having a fixed goal is a great help in the coaching process. On the other hand, coaching also serves to identify what is bothering or dissatisfying it and what should be done to regain enthusiasm.

Coaching provides more benefits and rewards than a person can imagine that is why, having an open goal helps to appreciate when they appear.

All coaching processes generate results, but not all results are accurate. Much more will be obtained from the process if you have an adequate and precise expectation of what you want to achieve, they will be more visible and tangible results. The greatest benefit of coaching is to provide greater awareness of the individual and to make safe and calm decisions.

Achieve goals

Coaching is a support mechanism to identify and achieve previously planned purposes. In the coaching process you can include any aspect of life that you want to change, for example: Improve interpersonal relationships, change jobs, start studying a new career, leave a vice, have a better physique, etc. If you have a wide list of purposes, it is necessary to organize them by priority so that you can achieve them all in a timely manner.

Find stability

Coaching helps can help to find stability and design strategies to find the balance between what you want to achieve. This method helps manage the person's life and resources in a much more efficient way.

Discover your own life purpose

Coaching helps identify unique qualities that can contribute to the outside world. Personal coaching allows you to take a step towards a spiritual journey or identify the work or activity with which a person can be fully carried out. It is recurrent that the search for a meaning or purpose is synonymous with change according to direction and structure of life.

Change attitude

The coaching methodology is mainly based on the principle that better results can be obtained when the approaches respond correctly to the person and are important to him. The best way to deal with unhelpful thoughts and ways of acting should be replaced by much healthier attitudes.

Enjoy the tour, the change

The joy of reaching a goal is much more enduring as you become more committed in each step taken to achieve it. Many people become "addicted to coaching" since setting and achieving goals becomes very important and reap many benefits in their lives.

COACHING CHALLENGES

If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you »

It is very important to know that "challenge" is one of the key skills that a coach needs to have, but it is very interesting to reflect on the many and varied meanings that people apply to the same word. For some challenges it amounts to confrontation, for others it means making the coachee stop, reflect, and explain.

Some definitions of challenge according to (TFD) are as follows:

  • A call to enter a contest, fight, or contest. An act or statement of challenge; a call to confrontation. a demand for explanation or justification; A call in doubt A test of our capabilities or resources in a demanding but challenging task.

The last two definitions may better reflect what challenge means in a training context. It is the challenge required is what moves the coachee from the comfort zone to the learning zone. The coach must ensure that coaching does not go too far as it can lead the coachee to the stress zone and jeopardize the relationship, trust and coaching relationship itself.

How is tension measured during coaching? This is related to your listening and observing skills: change in tone, body posture, eye movement, among others.

In their book "Challenging Coaching", John Blakey and Ian Day provide the actions that increase tension in coaching:

  • Use of silence Prolonged eye contact, especially when accompanied by silence Probing questions Challenging the coachee to take a risk ask the suggested question, "What is the riskiest thing you could do in this situation? Why don't you? Challenging statements Play the devil's advocate Take the role of opponent Use an approach opposite to the usual coachee style

On the other hand, the following interventions are also suggested to decrease tension:

  • Increase the level of support through conversation. Recognize the feelings the coach is observing. Provide affirmation and praise. Set lower, achievable goals for the coachee to experience positive feelings of success. Take a break, bring the training into an environment differently, take the training out of the normal workplace, like walking outdoors and training at the same time.

From my own coaching and supervision practice, I would highly recommend the practice of specifically hiring with the coachee about the challenge: what is your preference? (Then try and explore that, instead of just accepting that); What do you understand by challenge? Explain what the challenge will look like in the session.

Not all coaching results are perceived as positive. It is important to know in a conscious way that there may be disappointments of what is being left behind and face new reality about himself and decision making. Challenges should not be considered as suffering since there are many positive aspects to coaching.

TYPES OF COACHING

It is very easy to distinguish all types of coaching based on the number of clients that appear in the process and function of each one. For example, if it is a single client, coaching is defined as individual, if it is for several people who have one or more goals in common, it is team coaching on the other hand, specialized knowledge coaching can be seen many times. deep and in a unique environment such as executive coaching, political coaching, educational coaching, sports coaching, life coaching, among others. Here is a brief explanation of the different types of coaching:

Life coaching

Life coaching is without a doubt the best of coaching types and for good reason. Life coaches act as catalysts for their clients. No matter where they are trapped, a life coach will take the coachee by the hand and guide her along the way until she reaches your destination. People are actively looking for a life coach to come and change their lives and this is a great area of opportunity.

Wellness coaching

One in a wellness coaching is carried out according to a very interesting position since two experts are combined: a health professional and a physical trainer. The idea of wellness training is to work with a client and slowly guide them through the obstacles that bring them back to self-destructive and unhealthy behavior.

Personal Empowerment Coaching

This type of coaching seeks to help people with low self-esteem and limiting beliefs to achieve a higher state and with greater power.

Business coaching

This is easily one of the best and most profitable coaching niches on the market. This type of coaching is intended to help people to create their own business as well as small and large companies to double their profits.

Professional transition coaching

The professional transition is always complicated for several reasons. Generally, people need a lot of adjustments and prior education before joining their new job. And if not, then people will need someone to help them organize their interviews. It goes without saying that professional transition coaching carries with it a lot of responsibility since it has to be understood that people are literally giving up their careers and future professionals.

Executive Coaching

The corporate world is really hectic and for those in an executive position they must be "on" all the time. Executives are generally so busy that they do not receive basic executive training. They don't know how to better lead a team, simple team building exercises, and how to get the most out of their team. Executive coaching can help these people get the most out of themselves and their team. They can help them have a better work-life balance and function at optimal levels all the time.

Personal development coaching

The field of "personal development" has come a long way in the past decade. What used to be a little secret is now a billion dollar industry. So, with people more willing to seek help through books, videos, and trainers, now is the time to pay close attention to personal development coaching, which is very similar to life coaching in the sense that it involves helping clients to peel off and get them to the state they want to be in.

Sales coaching

Sales are the driving force behind any industry and company. If you want to measure how a particular industry is doing, you simply have to check sales and generate continuous improvement. So with this in mind it is not really a surprise that so many great companies and vendors seek coaching help for this particular area.

Performance coaching

Performance training uses psychological tactics to help people elevate their overall job performance. Performance coaches use commercial and sports psychology to help an individual perform at optimal levels and to make him more of a team player. More and more corporations are seeking help from performance coaches to help raise the performance of their employees.

COACHING METHODOLOGY

To implement a coaching methodology it is necessary to take the following principles into account:

  • Coach must understand how habits are formed Coach possess knowledge of how the coachee learns Practice sessions should be highly organized and well planned Practices should progress in a logical sequence Practices should be done in relative areas of the field

It should also be established that "practice does not do perfectly, practice achieves permanence."

This is true for both good and bad coaching. The quantity of practices should never be more important than the quality of the practices. Sessions should be kept simple and clear.

Next, three of the most famous and effective coaching methodologies will be exposed:

DBM

Development Behavior Modeling originates through Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), so it is considered a model mainly oriented to practice. NLP coaching uses the modeling of ideas as one of its bases.

In other words, NLP modeling is the study of all the aspects that make a person successful and thus show it to others. For example, the thoughts, behaviors, abilities, beliefs, values, among others that could excel in an activity.

COACH VILLE

The coaching model was created by row pioneer Thomas Leonard, better known as the father of modern coaching, this model incorporates the essential skills that a coach must have together, as well as the key steps in the conversation between the coach and the coachee.

GROW

The GROW model is one of the most structured and is primarily focused on results in the business environment according to coaching (based on tasks and challenges of collaborators and principals). It was designed by Graham Alexander, but it wasn't until John Whitmore released it.

This model is one of the most recognized around the world, since it is simple and very effective, and it can be adapted to any person and reality, as well as their goals.

Its initials mean:

G (Goal) - Setting a goal. The goal to be achieved is defined in great detail and in the most sensorial way possible that it may have.

R (Reality) - Reality. Context and reality are examined in the moment.

(Options) - Options. The possibilities that exist to achieve a goal and the possibility of achieving it are worked on.

W (Will) - Acting. In this phase, a detailed action plan is established that must be carried out diligently in order to achieve the desired goal.

CONCLUSION

As explained throughout this article, coaching consists of working hand in hand in a creative and stimulating process that inspires the coachee to achieve personal and professional goals.

In certain situations you should look for a coach, for example, when you feel discouraged or when personal and professional objectives are not reached, these situations are perfect for working with coaching. From coaching it is understood that the coachee has all the necessary resources to achieve her goals, only they must be focused. On the other hand, coaching works with the future, present and future since it is accompanied hand in hand by the person in question, the coach does not judge, nor does he say what to do, but simply shares the way to evolve.

On the other hand, organizational coaching uses the same methodologies but in an organization, seeking the greatest powers of collaborators and principals. The leader must be able to have tactics since if the tactics supposes a change, since in this change coaching must be introduced so that all the collaborators react as expected. The leader has a facilitating role and makes talent flow to achieve that goal.
