Errors in the design of an organizational culture

Many times we hear the top executives of institutions, raise a series of ethical values and ways of acting that, according to them, are the foundation of the organizational culture of their company. That is why when we visit many institutions we see beautiful pictures with the description of the mission, vision and ethical values of said company.

Unfortunately, in some cases, these paintings are only decorations on the walls of companies, since their fulfillment only exists in the minds of executives and in practice, what is seen is painful.

Why is this happening?

It happens that, as in society, in companies, there is also a convergence of human beings from different social classes, from different ways of thinking and even from different countries.

The Dominican composer Manuel Jiménez, on one occasion said "Culture is what one is", a statement that in my opinion is the most accurate definition of culture.

Under this concept we see how when studying the culture of peoples, sociologists look for the common features of micro-cultures that exist in a society and thus establish the general guidelines that build the general culture of that society.

As in society, as I said in principle, companies are multicultural bodies, so, when determining the guidelines of the organizational culture, it must be done with the involvement of all human resources, from the smallest position up to the highest, so that what is reflected in the mission, vision and values comes from the components that make up the organizational culture such as: values, areas, norms, language and communication, habits and customs. This would ensure that employees assume it as their own.

Unfortunately in many companies, organizational culture only exists in the heads of those who run it, because when they designed it, they did not carry out the aforementioned, they tried to impose it, they invented it in an office and they did not socialize it with the other members of the company.

So, the important thing is not to be at the forefront of the theory, the important thing is that what is established in it is what is practiced.

If not, what we will continue to see as part of an organizational culture will be beautiful paintings that only serve to decorate a wall.
