Webster's International Dictionary defines discipline as "Train through instruction or exercise." There are many however, who regard discipline as punishment. The word "discipline" is related to the word "disciple." Discipline is not just the application of corrections (Nancy Van Pelt, 2011).

According to Dr. Posse and Dr. Melgosa (2006) they mention that discipline is a process that lasts throughout life. At first, the sources of discipline are external, but as the years go by, discipline comes from oneself.

In a personal way, discipline is an important value in each individual because this manages to influence the characteristics of each person. Discipline is formed at a very young age and it is the parents mainly who influence this value.

The discipline and different aspects with which it is related are described below.

Discipline is an education for self-control, which makes the person more responsible; it makes her freer, but also more self-controlled. The truth is that for the discipline to be positive and provide good results, it requires an intelligent, systematic and continuous educational process (Dr. Raúl Posse and Dr. Julián Melgosa, 2006).

According to Dr. Posse and Dr. Melgosa (2006) he describes it as follows:

Eijo (2006) defines the essence of values ​​as their worth, of being valuable, and that value does not depend on individual subjective appraisals; they are objective values ​​situated outside of time or space. They are perceived through a non-intellectual operation called estimation. The values ​​can be realized, discovered or incorporated by the human being.

The term "value" is related to the very existence of the person, affects their behavior, shapes and models their ideas and conditions their feelings.

That is why I have described discipline as an inherent value in the human being, in which each one can develop it and apply it to their daily lives.

When discipline begins

Ellen G. White (20069 describes that discipline begins the moment the young child begins to choose his own will and his own behaviors, it is the moment when his education in discipline must begin.

How to get discipline

Right discipline that influences character is to be taught early in life. It is probably from the moment of birth when the child learns basic behaviors that will guide him in his eating, in his rest, in his hygiene and in his games. This said learning will continue throughout your life. As she grows, she will learn principles of conduct in all areas of life, which will serve to cope with the duties, crises and responsibilities that she will give her. (Dr Posse and Dr. Melgosa, 2006).

White indicated that it is the parents' job to restrain, guide and control. They can do no worse evil than allowing their children to satisfy all their childish desires and fantasies, and letting them follow their own inclinations; they can do no worse harm to them than to leave in their minds the impression that they must live to please themselves and have fun, to follow their own inclinations and to seek their own pleasures and companionship…. Young people need parents to educate and discipline them, to correct their bad habits and inclinations, and to prune their bad tendencies (Manuscript 12, 1898).

Similarly, White advises that parental responsibility is certainly difficult. Bad tendencies must be carefully restrained and tenderly reproached; the mind must be stimulated in favor of what is right. The child should be encouraged to achieve self-control. And this must be done judiciously, as the desired purpose could be defeated (Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, p. 138).

Children should be prepared, educated, and disciplined until their parents become obedient, respecting their authority.

White (2006) affirms that neglect of the early education of the child and the consequent strengthening of bad tendencies make future education difficult and is why discipline is, too often, a painful process.

Discipline must be the product of good educational planning. It is necessary to work hard and strategically in the formation of the character of the children, mainly the parents, which is on whom this responsibility falls. It should be taken into account that straight and lovingly exercised discipline achieves satisfaction in both parents and children, opening doors to a life full of success and positive satisfaction. And if the discipline is not yet available, it is necessary to begin to form it in ourselves, in order to become bearers of the discipline for future generations.
