Information Systems in a company

Information systems are developed for different purposes or purposes, which depend on one or more needs of a company, whether small, medium or large. They are designed by applying the concepts, techniques, and systems analysis.

The authors Kendall and Kendall say "Every Information System has a classification and each of these is distributed and supports different areas of an organization and supports their processes to be carried out properly." (Kendell, Kendell and, 2015).

There are six classifications for information systems within a company, which are focused on a certain area of the company.

1) Transaction Processing System

They are the systems that process large amounts of information captured in the company, which is mainly related to business transactions, payroll and inventories. This classification emphasizes the finance area of a company.

2) Office Authorization System and Knowledge Work System

There are two classes of systems at the knowledge level of a company:

Office automation systems (OAS, Office Automation Systems)

They help data workers who do not usually generate new knowledge, on the contrary, they analyze the information with the purpose of transforming or manipulating the data before sharing it, or distributing it with the rest of the company and sometimes outside the company.

Knowledge Work Systems (KWS)

It supports professional workers in their search for new knowledge and gives the possibility to share it with their company.

3) Data Processing System

They are those that process large amounts of information generated in administrative functions, such as inventory control, personnel control, etc. This is done automatically and daily.

4) System for Administration

They are based primarily on the data obtained and require the participation of humanware, software and hardware. This system is mainly used to make an exhaustive analysis in search of decisions.

5) Decision support system

Given the large amount of information obtained through analysis, it helps the company to make a single and better decision.

6) Expert System and Artificial Intelligence

This system allows the creation of intelligent machines that have a performance in each area of the company. The purpose of these machines is to do an efficient and fast job when looking for solutions to certain problems that employees cannot solve on their own. These machines have two specific areas which is the understanding of natural language (interaction with users) and the ability to solve problems with almost perfect logic.

Every Information System has a life cycle that consists of several stages that help the company to successfully achieve its objectives until said system fulfills its task.

This system consists of five stages which are:

  • Preliminary investigation Requirements determination Software design Implementation and evaluation

Computer System and its components

It is the set of interrelated parts that allows to store and process information that includes hardware, software and human resources (humanware). Hardware is everything physical or tangible of the computer, software refers to the logical part of the computer, such as the OS, firmware and programs.

Human component

All the people involved in all the cycles or phases of the computer system, who have to do with the development, implementation and exploitation of said system. This is the most important component of a computer system since it was obviously developed by humans for their use.

"The human factor that intervenes in a computer system generally refers to the people involved in the process, operation, implementation, development and updating, the result of which is productive." (Olvera, 2013).
