INDER experiences in working with the community and the benefits of activities with the elderly, both in the population and among the workers of the organization, are exposed. The creation of the circle of grandparents «Las Marianas» is addressed; with the different projects developed such as: "Gaining youth", For my sincere friend "," Love and life "," From the urban to the rural "," For a dwarf prince "and" The happy needle ". The work of a labor organization with its community is an option to improve the quality of life of the elderly, sensitize its workers to the needs of the people around them and exploit the potential that in many cases is yet to be discovered.

Overall objective

Contribute to the strengthening and development of the Comprehensive Care Program for the Elderly at the Taguasco People's Council.

Specific objectives

Raise the quality of life of adults arriving at the third age with the improvement of care for the elderly in the grandfather circle of the Popular Council of Taguasco.

  1. What to do to relate to the community? How to help each other? How to teach these people the role of our center? How to make them share with us our technological possibilities? How to insert ourselves into the cultural life of our environment, in the progress of the education centers that surround us? How to participate in the clubs that take place in this area? What means can be used to support these men and women with whom we live in the neighborhood?

The decision on where to start leaned in favor of the sectors of the community most in need of relationships and care, especially those people who at one time had an active social life and who, upon retiring, suddenly saw their social space reduced., and the housewives, stoically faced with the numerous difficulties that the special period produced in the country. Thus, a circle of grandparents arose, baptized with the name of “Las Marianas.”

Project “gaining youth

• Once incorporated into physical activity, they improve their feelings of self-worth, occupy their free time and reduce the loss of life content, because an effective Physical Education fills them with joy and motivation and helps them to satisfy their needs. Fig. 2. La Loma Park.

• These people can comfortably enjoy the comment of a good book, the reading of poems, sometimes even of their own creation, of riddles and jokes, which are awarded in the company of the grandfather circle.

Project the happy needle

• All these works serve as occupational therapy for people in need of recognition, participation and exchange. With this project, one contributes to break the loneliness, so harmful in this stage of life, regardless of the fact that it helps to outline their aesthetic taste, raise self-esteem and force physical and mental exercise.

Cultural project love and life

• Carrying out this activity, which encourages the spiritual world of the elderly, is another option to occupy their free time and is useful in the social sphere, because it makes it easier to entertain cultural and fun activities. Anthological songs from the Cuban and international songbook, Silvio Rodríguez, remind those who play them and listen to moments lived before. Once a year, a trip to the Serafín Sánchez Obelisk is prepared ”with the purpose of inserting the collective into that beautiful part of the Cuban fields the experiences of our work with the elderly.

Some results

• They have met people who have helped them at this stage.

• He manifests feeling more agile.

• You have found new friends.

• Think less about illness.

• Consider that the circle has helped you in your personal life.

• You want to join the "University of the elderly".

• You feel happier.

• You have learned things you did not know.

• Enjoy cultural activities in which you did not participate before.

• You have done activities that you always longed to do.

• You would like to learn computing.

Said grandfather circle "Las Marianas" had 10 older adults. Today, it brings together 20 people, who not only participate in the aforementioned projects, but, with everyone's enthusiasm, what is intended is the creation at INDER of a branch of the "University of the Elderly". Visits are also made to museums and activities together with the workers.

For our part, we have gained knowledge about this stage of life. The elderly people we work with have enriched us as human beings; now we understand our own family members better at this stage of life and thanks to this work, we feel more committed to caring for our retiring workers.

Objectives to meet

• Get closer to educational and cultural institutions, as well as to political and mass organizations in the community.

• Share more with the family nucleus of these people.

Final thoughts

• The work of a labor organization with its community is an option to improve the quality of life of the elderly, sensitize its workers to the needs of the people around them and exploit the potential that in many cases is yet to be discovered.

• It is recommended to extend this experience to other institutions. Its introduction will undoubtedly provide new solutions to the problem of caring for the elderly in each community.
