4 mistakes that prevent you from reaching your potential

Anonim

Have you ever thought that you do not feel fulfilled with what you do, that you have enormous potential but you cannot or do not know how to express it? I speak to many people who tell me that they want to make the best of themselves, take advantage of that talent, that potential they have inside and that is half abandoned and forgotten and they don't know how (or they are afraid of making changes).

It could be that you have a potential writer in there, or a motivational speaker like one of my clients, or that you want to apply the creativity that you have inside to your life. Whatever it is, the point is that following how you are is not helping you and you don't know what to do or how to bring it to light. What you are probably doing is making one of these four mistakes that keep you from reaching your potential:

  1. Do what others expect you to do. Maybe you are very clear about what you really want to do and you know that just trying would make you very happy, but… The expectations of others have you tied (or so you say). Your family, partner, friends are not enthusiastic about the idea. Either it is not well seen that you leave your career after X years and do something totally different, or… There will always be a but and a difficult situation and it is not easy. And if what you want is a radical change you will receive negative criticism and comments (as much as people love you). But I want you to know one thing, the hard thing, the hardest thing is that initial change, that first step. That's the worst, then the excitement of doing what you really want to do helps a lot and changes you and makes things different. Not easy, but not as difficult as that first step. Do not give importance to your wishes or feelings thinking that they are just nonsense. This is very frequent too, knowing that you want something else but not giving it importance or thinking that you are an adult and you have to stop thinking nonsense. What has ever happened to you? The fact that you are already an age or a situation or whatever comes to your mind and that you have to get those birds out of your head. Can you imagine how sad the world would be if no one had "birds in their heads"? If Picasso had decided that painting is for children, if Edison had thought that the light bulb was stupid; If your favorite writer had thought that writing is not for an adult and mature person. If Fernando Alonso had decided that driving race cars is crazy… Don't dismiss your desires by making excuses, being mature and adult means being able to accept what you really want and get going no matter how scared you are. It is being able to accept that there is something that you really want to bring to light and that you do not care what others think. Spending your time on things that do not fill you. How many hours do you spend a day doing things that don't really contribute anything to you? I am not going to give the typical example of television because you may be a screenwriter and you love to watch series and learn from them, or you may not consider it wasted time (neither do I, with control). But you know what I mean, what if you spent that “dead” time doing what really excites and fills you up? Write, cook, make T-shirts,rehearse talks, sign up for a course that develops that hidden potential… Let it remain a hobby or something temporary. This is probably the most important recommendation, if you really want to develop your potential and bring that talent to light, there is nothing more effective than making it professional. And think that we are talking not about something that is good for you and that's it, but about that kind of call you feel to do something. Whether it's being a novelist, being a missionary, being a landscaper or being a coach, I'm not talking about a hobby but about something else. That something that makes you wonder every day why you keep doing the same thing another day… There is nothing that makes you reach your true potential like dedicating yourself professionally to it (and we will not go back to dealing with your excuses, fears, etc.).sign up for a course that develops that hidden potential… Let it remain a hobby or something temporary. So tell me, which of these errors do you identify with and what first step are you going to take to fix it?
