At the beginning of this year 2014, I surveyed my subscribers with professional responsibilities, asking what they are most concerned about in their professional life. In a higher percentage than expected, I found a common response: the fear of not meeting the company's expectations of them. We are going to analyze how to handle this situation, leaving fear aside and leaning on who we truly are, on our values, passions and strengths.

Do you want to know what is really expected of you? Question!

We tend to break our heads wondering if we are coming to fulfill what our company expects of us, imagining the expectations they might have, instead of asking directly the person or Board of Directors to whom we report, and that leads us to fear unnecessary.

Find the ideal time to ask. If there is an annual evaluation system in the company you work for, of course that is the most appropriate time. If they do not have a stipulated system, be sure to choose the time and situation when they can pay attention to you, when there is no work rush or significant negotiation on the table, or bad environment due to any circumstance.

Your own expectations

We also have our own expectations regarding our performance and professional career, which unfortunately on many occasions are not met due to our lack of knowledge about how to focus on making them come true. That can lead to great frustration, which will sometimes lower your self-esteem to the point of constantly doubting yourself and wanting to quit due to fear of not being enough.

The solution? Having a realistic and adjusted vision of yourself, and this is achieved through self-knowledge, through Personal Development. Only in this way will you get rid of that fear that has been with you for so long, that lowers your self-esteem and limits you due to your high level of self-demand and perfectionism.

Find the objective vision of your values, passions, strengths and areas for improvement.

In addition to getting rid of self-demand and perfectionism through your Personal Development, you need to deepen that development and know yourself well to have an objective vision of what you really are at a professional level, know your values, passions, strengths and areas for improvement.

Once you have all that information, the next step will be to develop your Professional Career in a medium that allows you to develop your passions, give the best of your strengths, work in your areas of improvement and be faithful to your values. Do you remember people who supposedly having everything felt an existential emptiness? Well that is precisely the cause, this occurs when we do not honor what we truly are.

It is necessary to end the fear of not meeting expectations, both those of the company and their own. When we talk about the professional field, you should ask who you report what is really expected of you instead of worrying doubting about what it may be. Regarding yourself, work your Personal Development to get to have a realistic and adjusted vision of yourself, to get rid of self-demand and perfectionism, and to honor your values, passions and strengths.
