How to create a publishing calendar for your blog

Having editorial planning helps you be more organized, improve your content… and earn money!

Being farsighted is positive for any project you face; including your blogs. It is vital that we write on topics that we master, that our passion and knowledge of the topics exposed are noted. But something even more important is having a constant publication rate. The frequency with which we write it is the one that will determine the traffic that we generate on our blog.

It happens to all of us that there are days when we do not know what to write, but through post planning this can be solved. The best way to do this is to create a publication calendar for your blog.

You will surely wonder how this is done. It is really very simple, we just need to organize ourselves. First we must establish how many posts we will publish per month. Once that is defined, we must make a list of the topics that we are going to discuss. This will help us plan the monthly guidelines that we will give to the site, in addition to avoiding "being left without knowing what to write today". In addition, the calendar can help you, in case you do, to market your advertising spaces in advance. What am I talking about? A simple example: if your blog is about clothing sales, it is essential that you take into account, in advance, when the spring-summer season is approaching and when it should be published.

For all this, I describe below the steps you need to follow to create your calendar. The model that I present is for 15 days, although you can also do it weekly or monthly, depending on your needs or the number of ideas that come up.

1- To assemble it, you can use the traditional Word or Excel. However, I recommend the calendar options of Outlook Express or Google Calendar, because they have the alarm function, which can alert you when a key date is approaching.

2- Load (in Word or Excel) or view cells (in the other cases) with the next 15 days. The ideal is to add them vertically and with a text that is easily detectable, for example: Monday 15/12, Tuesday 16/12, etc.

3- It is not essential that you publish every day, you can do it every two or three days. With these frequencies you will always keep the site updated and your followers waiting to see what follows.

4- Imagine five categories that you would like to include in your blog, such as marketing, sales, news, interviews or technology.

5-For each of those categories, think of three articles that you could post. The idea is that you develop only one sentence, the main idea about what you want to convey in the article.

6- Load them in your calendar putting the articles in the second column, one next to each day. I put together an example for you, so you can adapt it to your own blog.

7- Make sure that the categories are separated so that, for example, there are no three marketing notes in a row, unless it is a series (part 1, part 2 and part 3). And ready, you already have a whole fortnight planned!

8- If you have or are interested in adding advertising, explain on your blog the posts that are coming. That may attract potential advertisers. For example, if your page is about cosmetics, clarifying that a "special summer" is coming could attract manufacturers of bronzers.

To give continuity to your blog, always carry a notebook with you. Whatever idea you can think of, wherever you are, write it down and, as soon as you get home, upload it to your calendar. You will see how much homework it gives you.

Ideas: in addition to planning your calendar organizing your posts by category (Marketing, Social Networks, Technology, etc.), you can also organize yourself according to “Types” of posts, for example:

Monday: Interviews with other bloggers

Wednesday: Reviews of third-party products, recommendations, opinions, etc. Here you can use your affiliate links, but keep in mind the new regulations.

Friday: Tutorials or articles like "How to do xx" "How to achieve xx".

Saturdays: “Link posts”, articles in which you recommend posts from other bloggers.

Of course, these articles will also be assigned the corresponding category, so you will also be using them.

So now you know: planning your blog posts can be good business. Literally.
