How to teach your child to respect others

Anonim

One of the most important things you can teach your child is the value of respect, and the best way for him to learn it is to lead by example. When a child feels respected, they will begin to understand how important it is.

Treat others as you would like them to treat you

Respect is an attitude. Being respectful helps a child succeed in life. If children don't respect their peers, authority figures, or even themselves, it's almost impossible for them to succeed. A respectful child is careful with his belongings and responsibilities, and gets along well with his peers.

Schools teach children the value of respect, but parents have the greatest influence on children when it comes to learning to be respectful. In fact, until children show respect at home, they don't usually start showing respect in other places, like school or the park.

Leading by example

If you do something wrong, admit it and apologize. Don't try to embarrass, insult, or tease your child. Praise him and allow him to make decisions and take responsibility for himself. Always listen to your child's side of the story before making a decision on an issue or problem. Be polite and use "please" and "thank you" when you ask him to do something. Gently knock on the door before entering your child's room. Keep promises. Show your child that what you say, you say from your heart. And give it your full attention.

And most importantly, teach your child that respect is earned. Make sure you are setting an example of respectful behavior. Shows concern for the environment, animals and other people. Openly express your opinion about disrespectful behavior.

Teach your child to respect himself

Self-respect is one of the most important forms of respect. Once we respect ourselves, it is easier to respect others.

Help your child set and achieve objective goals. Encourage them to fight for them honestly and teach them that everyone makes mistakes, and that mistakes are necessary to learn and become a better person.

Don't forget the most important thing: praise your child often for good deeds or appropriate behaviors, and let him know he loves you, at least several times a day.

Many times parents ask me for guidelines for their child's challenging behavior and once they start working with therapy they realize that they are the first to not act respectfully. If you have trouble getting your child to respect you, follow these guidelines and it will be easier for you to educate a child capable of being respectful and worthy of respect.
