Summary

The purpose of this document is to explain the process of installing a Point-to-Point wireless link to provide internet and telephony to a client located in a remote area of ​​the city.

Scope and limitations

It is explained to the client that the link via wireless can reduce their connection during the course of a storm or tropical cyclone, like any other wireless connection system, but it is guaranteed that in case of damage to any equipment, a replacement will be made. as immediately as possible. There are no manufacturer restrictions to provide Internet and telephone services with security, reliability and connectivity.

Problem Statement

Will the implementation of a wireless link solve the need for internet and telephony in the company in Cancun?

The company has installed its offices on the Federal highway between Cancun and Puerto Morelos, at a far distance from the Internet and telephone exchanges that are commonly found in the city, so that the connection of the client's Site to the nearest Radiobase must be made. Twisted pair cable ISP is not feasible and the Fiber Optic connection is a costly implementation for a single customer.

Due to the above, it was decided to make the interconnection via wireless using a point-to-point link with Alvarion model TS3000 Walknet antennas. Which meet the necessary requirements to provide an efficient quality connection.

For the Internet service, a Cisco 1841 Router will be installed in which the Bandwidth on both interfaces will be limited to 2MB each. For the Telephony service, a Quintum Model AFG400 telephone gateway will be installed.

Provide 2 MB of Internet and incoming and outgoing telephony services in the company located in Cancun.

Background

Various articles have been written and elaborate investigations of point-to-point connections have been made, such as the contribution made by N. Shen where he describes the use of the Link state routing protocols, which is technically where the connection we want to achieve is based. between the two points. (Shen, 2008)

Sieborger investigates wireless technologies and describes the use in the field of work of Alvarion equipment and its application for long distance links, referring to what is called "last mile access technology". (Sieborger, 2007)

Hypothesis

With the implementation of this project it is intended to demonstrate that the intervention of a point-to-point link via wireless will benefit the client in their need for internet and telephone service in their remote offices, far from the urbanization. With an efficient and effective quality of service, which in the long run will be reflected in a useful work tool for the different areas in the company.

Methodology

It begins with the Gathering of the information, that is, making a technical visit to the client's Site, to evaluate what equipment it currently has in its LAN and telephone networks. After this, the type of means of transport to be used to connect the customer's Site to the closest Radiobase of the ISP is determined. As a third and fourth step, the type of router and telephone gateway to be installed is selected, both adequate to provide the Internet and voice service that is required.

The ISP Engineering area provides the IP's to be configured in the Router for its WAN connection (connection to the Radiobase) and assigns the lines that the client will have, which are also notified to the Billing area for their corresponding subsequent collection.

The Outside Plant department assigns a technician to go to the site to install and configure the antennas on the client side. In parallel, the Transport Area will be installing the corresponding antennas in the Radiobase, the Middle alignment is carried out and a fine adjustment is made to ensure the reliability of the connection. Once the Transport Medium is properly configured and installed, the Router and the Telephone Gateway are installed at the customer's Site.

Finally, Navigation tests (access to web pages) are carried out, verifying that the speed is correct and outgoing and incoming test calls are made. A technical report of the installation is prepared and delivered to the client for their information and safekeeping.

According to the technical visit carried out on site, it is determined that there is a Line of Sight from the client's 20-meter-high tower to the ISP's Radiobase.

We proceed to install the ODU Antenna (External Unit) composed of Dish, Feeder and Antenna. The dish and the Feeder work as an amplifier of the signal provided by the Antenna. The connection of the ODU with the IDU Equipment (Internal Unit) is made through Coaxial cable for the exterior, placing plastic cables to the tower, this to prevent the Cable from being loose to the weather conditions and being damaged or generating a damage to other equipment. The cable is entered towards the Site, where it connects to the TS3000 in the Coaxial port. The above described is the same procedure for the client as the ISP Radiobase.

Then, on the client side, it connects from the TS3000 Port 1 -through a UTP cable- to the Quintum (Ethernet port). And Port 2 towards the Cisco Router on FastEthernet port 0/0, with UTP cable as well. In the case of the Router, the FastEthernet 0/1 interface is connected to the customer's switch through UTP cable. For the Quintum, 3 cables of 4 wires each with an RJ11 connector for telephony are used, towards the ports of the client switch.

With these elements, it is possible to fulfill the initial need of the client to have Internet and Telephony service, saving high implementation costs through fiber optics or the acquisition of rent / purchase of equipment with high costs to receive the service.
