What is a domain on the internet?

Anonim

If you want to start an Internet Business, having a website, blog or forum is vital to make yourself known on the net. For that, you must first have your domain or domains that you will use to place your different sites on the network.

Getting a domain is very easy, and I will explain it to you with a simple example.

In the real world, if you want to start a traditional business of whatever it was, for example a restaurant; The first thing that is done is to register the name of said business in the public records and that way you already have the right or permission to have that restaurant using the name that you have given it, that is, you gave it a presence in the real world.

On the Internet it is something similar, since if you want the web page of your blog or business to have a presence in the world of cyberspace, you must register a name, that is, a DOMAIN; and it will be a unique name because there cannot be 2 identical domains.

Here you can see examples of Domains:

Parts of a domain

www.wikipedia.com

www.youtube.com

www.facebook.com

www.loszapatos.es

www.taringa.net

www.negocioseninternet.info

etc.

Let's assume that you have a domain of the type:

www.mydomain.com

In this domain there are 3 parts:

www = World Wide Web Initials, translated into Spanish would be " World Global Network ", that is, a network that connects all computers through the Internet.

mydomain = The name you chose for your domain, when you bought it.

.com = It is the domain extension, or to understand it better it would be a "Domain type".

There are several types of domain, among the most important are:

.com (Used for commercial purposes and is the one with the most reputation).

.net (Used in the areas of technology and the network).

.org (Typically used for non-profit organizations).

.info (Used more for websites that provide information).

.gov (Used for organizations in a country or state).

Relationship between IP address and domain name

In the world of the Internet and Computing, the servers and computers of the world communicate by means of numbers, just as we human beings do it by means of words.

Each domain in the World Wide Web is assigned an IP address and so when we type www.google.com for example, what the computer does through the network is to translate that domain and see the IP assigned to it. In this case the Google IP is 64.233.169.99.

As a test, write that number in the address bar and google will appear automatically, try it!

Now you know what a domain is and what type of domains exist, and this is the first great step to be able to have a PRESENCE in the network of networks, and even more important if you want to start business on the internet.
