About the University of Los Andes

Founded on November 16, 1948 by a group of young people led by Mario Laserna Pinzón, the Universidad de los Andes is the first private higher education institution in Colombia of a secular nature and independent of political parties, oblivious to defending the interests of some social or economic group.

Precisely, these characteristics made Los Andes an avant-garde educational project in a historical moment in the country in which private universities had the influence of partisan conflict in their classrooms. In this historical context, “the birth of Los Andes was not only due to the desire to give life to another university or to an exclusively educational interest, but to the intention of creating a new country.
