INTRODUCTION
This essay will address the issue of the minimum wage in Mexico, which is of great interest to all, since the vast majority believe that it is not enough to meet the most essential needs of the individual such as: education, food, clothing and living place.
The history of wages in Mexico and its origin in the world will be briefly mentioned, the institution in charge of regulating will also be cited and see that this perception is correct as dictated by law.
OBJECTIVE
The minimum wages will be defined, we will analyze if the minimum wage in Mexico is sufficient to cover basic needs, to which the same law says we are entitled as Mexican citizens.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The minimum wage is the minimum wage legally established for each work period (hour, day or month), which employers must pay to workers. It was first established in Australia and New Zealand in the 19th century.
In 1917, according to the STPS (Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare), its article 123 established that minimum wages should be set by special commissions; It was not until 1931 that reforms were issued that reinforced this idea. By 1963, constitutional article 123 and the Federal Labor Law were modified, giving rise to the National Commission and 111 Regional Commissions of Minimum Wages, the latter set wages, under the supervision of the National Commission. As of January 1, 1987, minimum wages were set by a single commission, CONASAMI, (National Minimum Salaries Commission); The main objective of which is to comply with the provisions of Article 94 of the Federal Labor Law, in which it is entrusted to set the legal minimum wages,trying to ensure the congruence between what is established in the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, with the economic and social conditions of the country.
DEVELOPING
Currently an approximate of six million Mexicans receive a minimum wage, is this enough to pay for basic expenses of a family? Taking into account that in our country who provides for the expense (usually), is the head of family (dad), what would you have to do to get more money? Have working hours with more hours? Or would the salary have to be modified?
Currently the salary in Mexico is divided into two areas; in area "A" the salary is $ 70.10 pesos per day, while in area "B" it is $ 68.28 pesos per day. Taking into account and as already mentioned previously, the needs to be covered are several, which is almost impossible to satisfy with those amounts of money.
When referring to basic needs, we understand as such those necessary to live, these are food, shelter, clothing and education; If we add to this other expenses that are also necessary such as public transport or if there were private transport, the expenses that this would entail (gasoline, repairs, insurance…), household goods, electricity, water, property, telephone, cable, internet, in addition to unforeseen expenses, leisure activities, etc… Speaking of education, our political constitution states in its article 3 ro that education is secular and free up to the upper secondary level, but sometimes public education does not have the desired educational offer, and less at the higher level, in such a way that the only alternative is private schools to be able to continue with a preparation Professional and of course, this generates an additional expense, which for a large part of the society that receives a minimum wage, it is impossible to pay.
For the sector of the population that works in informal jobs, they can forget about an extra expense that, compared to the minimum formal wage earners, will have to pay taxes.
However, a large percentage of those who earn the minimum wage do not have social security, so they have to resort to other medical options and therefore to the payment of consultations and medicines. Taking into account the above information, it could be concluded that the minimum wage in Mexico is not enough to cover the basic needs of those who receive it. So, would the working hours have to be extended to increase the monetary income of the head of the family? We can realize that there is a certain incongruity between what our Law dictates and what really happens around the minimum wage and the needs to be covered by it.
And since lengthening working hours would be against the law, in addition to being counterproductive, both for the employee and for the employer, since the performance would not be the same due to fatigue, apathy would generate little interest to perform their tasks. functions triggering a series of inappropriate behaviors, which is not convenient for any employer.
Personally, I suggest a modification to the minimum wage, which truly guarantees a decent life for families in our country, without deficiencies and with the same opportunities to carry out their daily activities, thus being able to live and not survive in the face of demands of a society, which to date is characterized by its very marked social distinctions.
